Training for employees, resources for everyone

November is Trans Awareness Month in San Francisco. In recognition, we are excited to announce the launch of a new online training module titled “Transgender 101: Strengthen Your Commitment to Inclusion”. Now available to all ~35,000 City and County employees, this new module offers an introduction to transgender and non-binary identities, a critical analysis of the gender binary, best practices around gender pronouns, and an overview of the City’s Gender Inclusion Policy.

Our Manager of Training and Education, Shane Zaldivar, worked with the City and County’s Department of Human Resources to develop this important training module in response to the increased demand for our training sessions in recent years. In addition, our team will continue to offer live online trainings for City and County Departments with the goal of improving trans inclusion in City services and workplaces.

Alongside the module we have launched a new website, sf.gov/oti-training, which includes information on our live online training for City and County employees, as well as resources for everyone to learn more about trans and non-binary people and issues.

In addition to celebrating Transgender Awareness Month, let us not forget the origins of this observance: Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) which is commemorated every November 20th, honors those we have lost due to transphobia in the past year. In 2021 alone, at least 45 transgender and non-binary people (the majority of whom were Black and Latina trans women) have been murdered due to transphobia, trans-misogyny, and racism in the United States. In many instances, these violent attacks are a result of ignorance, bias, and dehumanizing portrayals of transgender and non-binary people.

Both in-person and virtual TDOR events will be held this week, including the following (all times in PST):
